Yellow Calf is of Arapaho, Chippewa and Metis background and is known for her work with 10 Buffaloes Art that brings her unique artistic perspective to this collective exhibition and beyond. Yellow Calf's artistic career has been gaining significant momentum. She was recently featured in the prestigious "In the Spirit" exhibition at the Washington State Museum, where her work garnered attention for its contemporary take on traditional indigenous art forms. This important exhibition further cemented her reputation as a rising voice in Indigenous artistic expression and the art world in general.
In a notable career achievement, 2024 marked Yellow Calf's debut at the Santa Fe Indian Market (SWAIA), one of the most significant and competitive showcases for Indigenous artists in North America. Her participation in this renowned market represents a major milestone, allowing her work to reach new audiences and collectors while placing her in conversation with some of the most respected Indigenous artists working today.
The exhibition at Matzke Gallery opens with a reception on March 8th, from 4:30 to 7:30 PM, featuring musical performances by "Second Fiddle" and Paul Nyenhuis on "Native Flute," creating an immersive cultural experience for visitors.
Yellow Calf will be exhibiting alongside six other indigenous artists: Jay Bowen (Upper Skagit), Monika DeNasha (Ojibwe), Bill Hacker 9Nisqually and Yakama Nations), Allie High (Aleut/Tsimshian), James Madison (Tulalip/Tlingit/Snohomish), and Kevin Paul (Swinomish). The show presents an important opportunity to experience contemporary interpretations of indigenous artistic traditions from across the Pacific Northwest.
Visitors interested in viewing the exhibition can attend throughout its run, which continues through April 20th. The gallery is open Friday through Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with Monday through Thursday visits available by appointment.
