Melanie Russ, born in 1977 in Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, is the daughter of esteemed Haida artist Ed Russ and Faye Russ. Growing up in the culturally rich environment of Haida Gwaii, Melanie was immersed in the traditions and artistry of her people from an early age. Her parents, both deeply connected to Haida art and culture, recognized her natural talent for carving and encouraged her creative pursuits.
Melanie began honing her skills under the guidance of her mother, specializing in the creation of argillite sculptures and jewelry. Over the years, she has developed a distinctive style, blending traditional Haida motifs with modern interpretations. As one of the few female argillite carvers, she has earned recognition for her intricate craftsmanship and dedication to preserving Haida cultural expressions through her work.
In addition to her artistry, Melanie is an advocate for cultural education, often sharing her knowledge of Haida art and history with younger generations. Her work not only celebrates her lineage but also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Haida culture and the importance of women’s contributions to Indigenous art forms.
